When I'm 31...

posted Monday, 17 March 2008

I don't know how year 30 slipped by so fast, but here it is my last week of being 30 and I'm neither looking forward to or dreading year 31. I feel like 30 was a bit of a hibernation year. Yes, yes, I know a few big things happened, but I was a bit like a field left fallow.

Some highlights of the year.

1. I attended two writing retreats. Big Lesson? I have at least one novel inside of me that people are interested in and a non-fiction book. Bigger Lesson? Just write it. I'll finish it when I'm 31. (The novel is now over 6000 words.)

2. I did a few sessions with a personal trainer and found out that I am much stronger than I give myself credit for... but then life happened and the gym became a dusty memory. I'll reclaim my strength when I'm 31.

3. I connected with hundreds of people on Twitter. Literally, hundreds of people. And then I started meeting people and starting relationships. I'll keep building these relationships and meet more people when I'm 31.

4. I realized that taking the train to and from Bloomington in one day is really nice and will try to do it more. I'll spend more time with my family when I'm 31.

5. I recovered from the unrequited love that overshadowed my late 20s and gave romance a couple tries this year. I'll be open to being in love when I'm 31.

6. My close friends, Amy and Dondi, did Trading Spaces on my condo which seemed to release all sort of energy and saved me $50K. I'll clean, decorate and move the energy in my home when I'm 31.

7. I went to Israel, gave tzedaka, volunteered more and did lots of Jewish stuff. I'll do more of that in a way that is important to me when I'm 31.

8. I bought clothes in a bigger size than I had in a couple years. When I'm 31, I'll get to a healthier weight and buy attractive clothes that fit.

9. I got promoted which means my salary now matches my life. I'll reduce my debt and increase prosperity when I'm 31.

10. I hope I got more willing to take advice, although I'm not sure that's true. What do you think I should do when I'm 31?

I turn 32 next month. At 31, take the time to walk more and look up. Life looks alot better on foot. Spend a Saturday reliving what it was like back in the 1900s, Chicago. I always smile when I get to State and Madison - once the busiest corner in Chicago.

I have a long standing tradition of celebrating my birthday for a full week and I highly recommend this. This allows for many birthday toasts.

You've done a good job of covering the important bases with your 10 points: health, love, prosperity, family, faith and writing. What could possibly be added? Laughter, adventure, risk, permission to be imperfect. You've already made it. Enjoy.
