I took Ronnie's advice and before I got my first cup of coffee this morning, I hung a new mezuzah. I'm feeling much more calm about the whole situation. I figure I had three options.
1. Scream and cry some more, be angry, get an ugly mezuzah with a non-kosher scroll, hang it up and expect it to be stolen. Also call the police and the ADL to report a hate crime. Be angry some more, cultivate fear in myself, and expect bad things to happen because someone hates me and hates jews.
2. Be numb. Not replace the mezuzah. Not follow a mitzvah that I love. Let them win.
3. Replace the missing mezuzah with my most beautiful, most meaningful mezuzah. Let God and everyone know that I won't stand for my spirituality to be stomped on by some anonymous asshole.
That is what I did. The women I'm friends with at temple gave me a beautiful mezuzah for my conversion. With painted silk, from Jerusalem, and with a kosher scroll. Truth be told, I'd always wanted to put it on my doorpost, but couldn't--cause I had my aluminum mezuzah up. Now I have a beautiful, special one on my doorpost. I have reaffirmed my commitment ot the Jewish People and to our history, one mezuzah at a time.
I'm sorry your mezuzah was stolen. That is just awful!
