War sickens me, but I stand with Israel.

posted Friday, 2 January 2009

"Wars sickens me, even wars that I support. I support Israel's offensive in Gaza, but watching it on TV -- the images of bombed-out buildings, crying women and, inevitably, the bodies of innocent bystanders -- is a painful experience."  Rabbi Eric Yoffie

"Israel's actions in Gaza are justified under international law, and Israel should be commended for its self-defense against terrorism. Article 51 of the United Nations Charter reserves to every nation the right to engage in self-defense against armed attacks." Alan Dershowitz

Today marks the end of the first week of Israel defending herself against Hamas. Not against Gaza, not against the Palestinians, but against Hamas in Gaza.

I stand with Israel and believe in her right to defend her citizens.

Where can you go to get more information? I'm involved with a group in Israel called HelpUsWin.org. Help Us Win is trying to win hearts and minds for Israel. Israel has done a terrible job telling her side of the story, so we are stepping in to tell it.

This is the power of social media.

The site is place for supporters to go for more information, but we are also building FAQs, timelines, pages of aggregated news, aggregated video content, aggregated photos and even a way to donate your status on Facebook to the cause.

I'll be getting active on Digg for the first time ever and digging stories that tell Israel's side of the story, scanning HARO to find stories that we can pitch an Israeli angle to, and tagging content that I find on delicious with helpuswin. Those are places you can go to find stories written by people who are more eloquent than I about the matter.

If you have forgotten how I feel about Israel here are the postcards I wrote about Israel for her 60th. An essay I wrote about place which Israel figures into greatly. And if you think I don't seek peace over war, please read posts from our small meme in 2006 - Shalom2006, A Vision of a World Redeemed.

Another good resource for analysis is www.honestreporting.com. Honest Reporting is a website that monitors Mideast media bias and ensures that Israel receives fair worldwide press coverage.

Also check out The Israel Project (www.theisraelproject.org). The Israel Project is an international non-profit organization devoted to educating the press and the public about Israel while promoting security, freedom and peace. The Israel Project provides journalists, leaders and opinion-makers accurate information about Israel.

i would say that not only has Israel done a horrible job of telling it's story, but it has also done a horrible job of defending itself in a manner which lends itself to any sympathy. i fully support Israel's right to exist and it's right to defend itself, it's borders and it's citizens. BUT. when you are defending yourself against callous terrorists who blow up civilians, either with suicide bombers, or with indiscriminately aimed rockets, the simplest, best, easiest way to ensure the world has a tough time being sympathetic to your enemies is to make "zero civilian casualties from Israeli weapons, no exceptions" your top priority. but Israel does not do this. they seem to almost enjoy wallowing in the tit for tat exchange of civilian deaths and this, i think, more than almost anything else, makes it extremely difficult to be sympathetic with their plight. it ceases to look like defense and begins to look far too much like revenge. and overkill revenge at that.

This is from www.helpuswin.org

"Fighting in Gaza – The harming of innocent civilians

The loss of any innocent civilian is painful. But we need to remember one thing clearly: When Israel strikes at Hamas, it is trying to avoid civilian casualties. Hamas makes every effort to kill children. It fires at kindergartens, schools, civilians – because that’s what suits its radical values. Our values are fundamentally different.

We exclusively aim at military targets, at installations that Hamas uses to wage war. We even rule out some prime military targets because a strike poses too much of a danger to the civilian population. In many cases the Israeli army calls Palestinian residents on the phone and informs them that it intends to bomb a nearby building and they should distance themselves from the vicinity. But Hamas, in contrast, hides behind civilians, deliberately situating its installations and arms warehouses among them. Hamas does not care what happens to the citizens of Gaza.

On Friday, before the operation began, Hamas fired rockets and killed two Palestinian schoolgirls in Beit Lahia. The fate of the people does not matter to Hamas – it callously uses them as human shields."

i think Graet Israel is right about the war . Israel must defend itself against terrorism known as "Hamas" . I am fully confident and firm belief that the land known as "Palestine" is the land of "Israel" and we, the Palestinians have to deal with the Israelis that they are the owners of the land and we are guests. Oh God, protect the State of Greater Israel from the Hamas terrorism. And may God have mercy on children and women, the elderly and the young Israelis who are "the greatest peoples on the earth" who were killed by terrorists.
